This blog announcement contains two announcements: a price reduction for Custom Classification events and two models becoming generally available.
Custom Classification price reduced by 50%
Watson Visual Recognition’s Custom Classification feature allows users to train our service to recognize their own images to recognize any new object, person, or attribute. Companies can create solutions designed for their industry and use case to achieve unique, powerful results.
Starting July 1, 2018, all classifications made to a trained Custom Model will be charged half their current rate.
Previously, Custom Classification calls were charged at $0.004 per image. Moving forward, all future Custom Classification calls — for both current and new users — will cost $0.002 per image.
This price change affects all Custom Model classifications: through the SDK, Watson Studio, or via direct request to the API.

Food Model and Explicit Model become generally available
We would like to inform you that both the Food Model and Explicit Model will become generally available (GA) on August 1, 2018.
The Food Model: This allows users to more accurately tag images containing food. This domain model has been uniquely trained to recognize more food and meals than the General Model and also contains a “non-food” class for easy filtering.
The Explicit Model: This is the easiest way to monitor images for adult content and is especially helpful in large-scale appropriateness monitoring like chat, social media, and user-generated content.
These two Watson Visual Recognition models were previously available in public beta.
- For current users of these models: All accounts using the public beta versions today will be automatically transitioned to the GA versions of both models on August 1, 2018. No change in code will be required. All instances will be supported.
- For new users of these models: You may access these models the same way you access our other GA models. For the most up-to-date information, please view our documentation.
Both models are available in GA through the SDK, Watson Studio, or via direct request to the API.
Both models will be free in our Lite Plan and charged $0.002 per image in our pay-as-you-go Standard Plan. For the most up-to-date pricing and plan information, please visit our catalog.
For users who have not yet migrated to GDPR-compliant instances, please note that all data will be removed from non-compliant instances on October 1, 2018. For more information, please visit our migration documentation.
